Jacobite Church to Host Consecration of Holy Mooron After 22 Years

Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II will consecrate the Holy Mooron at St Athanasious Cathedral in Puthencruz in a two-day ceremony from 12 November 2026, according to The New Indian Express. The sacred oil has not been consecrated in the Jacobite Syrian Church for 22 years.

Twenty-two years is a long time to wait. A whole generation of Jacobite Christians has grown up and baptized their own children without ever seeing the Church's sacred oil made fresh. On 12 November, that wait ends.

Holy Mooron Returns to Kerala After 22 Years

The ritual returns to the Church after 22 years, said Kuriakose Mor Theophilos, metropolitan of the Thiruvananthapuram region. The Mooron was last consecrated on 25 November 2004 by Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I, co-officiated by the then Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I at Kothamangalam Marthoman Cheriapally.

That 2004 ceremony now feels like a different age. The Patriarch who led it has passed on, and so has the Catholicos who stood beside him. The men gathering in Puthencruz carry the same office and prayers, but they are a new generation, picking up a thread laid down over two decades ago.

For the roughly one million Jacobite faithful across India and the world, this is no routine ceremony. The Holy Mooron touches every baptized member, since it seals a newborn child at chrismation. Every drop used from Kerala to the Gulf traces back to a consecration like this one.

Patriarch Aphrem II's Six-Day Visit to Kerala

Mor Aphrem II will be on a state visit from 11 to 16 November 2026, and the consecration sits at the heart of the trip. The Patriarch of Antioch rarely travels to Kerala, and when he does, beleivers across the state turn out to receive him.

It is a double celebration. The ceremony will mark the 150th anniversary of the first Holy Mooron consecration in Kerala and the 150th anniversary of the Mulanthuruthy Synod, Mor Theophilos said. The first consecration in the state took place on 10 December 1876, at Mulanthuruthy church.

Only the Patriarch Can Consecrate the Holy Mooron

The Catholicos and supreme head of the Jacobite Church, Aboon Mor Baselios Joseph, will co-officiate, and other bishops of the church will attend. Only the patriarch has the authority to officiate the Holy Mooron consecration in the Jacobite Church, said Mor Theophilos.

That rule is what makes the wait so long. No bishop, no Catholicos, no synod can step in and do it themselves. The oil can only be consecrated when the Patriarch of Antioch himself is present, and his visits are rare.

Preparations at the Patriarchal Centre are already complete. A specially arranged Beth Gazo room to house the liturgical book of Syriac chants was dedicated there, the report said. Every detail of the two-day ceremomy has been planned around the ancient rite.

What Is the Holy Mooron?

The Holy Mooron, also called Myron, is the holy chrism oil of the Syriac Orthodox tradition. It is a blend of olive oil, myrrh, balsam, and aromatic spices, prepared with prayer and consecrated by the Patriarch with at least two other bishops present.

Each new batch is mixed with a small portion of the previous batch. The practice keeps an unbroken line through every consecration, a chain the Church believes reaches back to the apostles' first oil. That is why the 22-year gap matters: the line was never broken, but it has been long since it was renewed.

The oil is used in Holy Chrismation, the anointing given right after baptism, when the newly baptized is sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is given only once in a person's life, which makes every drop precious. A child baptized in a small Kerala parish this winter will carry oil blessed by the Patriarch's own hands.

India's Christians have had a hard year. The question now is what the next 22 years will hold. The oil consecrated on 12 November will anoint babies not yet born and bless churches not yet built. When the Patriarch lifts the vessel in Puthencruz, he will be handing the Church its future, one drop at a time.
