Catalonia Evangelical Churches Surge as Catholic Sites Fall

Evangelical places of worship in Catalonia have grown to 889 — 100 more than in 2020 — making evangelicalism "the religious tradition that has seen the most significant growth in the last 20 years", according to the Religious Map of Catalonia, reported by Evangelical Focus on 6 November 2026. Over the same period, the region's Catholic churches have shrunk, and the two lines on the map now point in opposite directions.
Two numbers tell the story. Evangelical churches: 889 and climbing. Catholic churches: 5,665 and falling, down from 5,956 just six years ago. In one Catalan city, Badalona, evangelical congregations now outnumber Catholic ones altogether.
889 Evangelical Churches and Counting
The Religious Map of Catalonia counts 7,260 places of worship in total across the region. Of those, 78 percent — 5,665 — are Roman Catholic, down from 5,956 (80.4 percent) in 2020. That is a loss of 291 churches, or 4.4 percent, in six years.
The evangelical story runs the other way. From 789 places of worship in 2020, the count has risen to 889, and the map's authors call evangelicalism the religious tradition with the most significant growth in the last 20 years. The first evangelical churches were established in Catalonia in the second half of the 19th century, often alongside educational centres, social work services and even hospitals — and that habit of building institutions around the congregation is still visible in the way the movement grows today.
The study attributes the Catholic decline partly to ageing congregations closing down or merging into a nearby parish, and partly to some dioceses no longer counting privately owned places where it is unknown whether public services are held. It is a slow, quiet contraction: a parish merges here, a chapel closes there, and over six years the map loses 291 dots.
What the Rest of the Map Shows
Catalonia's religious landscape is more varied than the two big numbers suggest. Islam is the third most represented religion with 326 places of worship, and 42 new mosques were built between 2020 and 2024. Registration is not mandatory, so the true figure could be higher.
The map also counts 112 Jehovah's Witnesses halls, 67 Buddhist temples, 53 Orthodox churches and 26 Hindu temples. Barcelona alone has 584 places of worship across 15 confessions, and 747 across the metropolitan area. The city is now one of the most religiously diverse urban areas in southern Europe, and the growth is already shaping how it is planned.
An "Urgent and Key Debate" for Barcelona
On Friday 6 November, Ramon Bassas, the Catalan goverment's Director General for Religious Affairs, told a Barcelona conference that the revision of the metropolitan urban plan must address the changes, calling it an "urgent and key debate". The question is practical, not theological: where do hundreds of growing congregations meet, and who makes room for them in a city that was planned around a different religious map?
Local reporting from Badalona shows the shift street by street. The city now has more evangelical churches than Catholic ones, with evangelical congregations outnumbering 21 Catholic churches among 60 active centres of worship. That is the kind of detail that does not show up in national statistics — a neighbourhood where the church on the corner changed hands, and then the next one, until the balance tipped.
The growth is not a sudden revival meeting or a single charismatic leader. It is the accumulation of two decades of small congregations opening, staying open, and multiplying — while older, larger institutions quietly consolidate. The map captures the result, not the cause, but the result is unmistakable.
A Wider European Pattern
Catalonia's numbers fit into a wider picture across Europe, where the old certainties about who fills the pews are shifting fast. In some places, Catholic life is surging among the young even as parish buildings close. In others, evangelical and Pentecostal congregations are the ones opening new doors. The Religious Map does not explain why any of this is happening — it simply counts the buildings, and the buildings tell their own story.
What makes Catalonia striking is the scale and the speed. A hundred new evangelical places of worship in six years is not a rounding error. Nearly 300 fewer Catholic churches in the same window is not a blip. Together, they describe a region whose spiritual centre of gravity is moving, congregation by congregation, street by street.
The Barcelona conference on 6 November was, in that sense, a recognition that the map has already changed and the planning has to catch up. Bassas called it urgent, and the numbers back him up: 7,260 places of worship, 15 confessions in a single city, and a trend line that has pointed the same way for 20 years.
The next edition of the Religious Map will show whether the evangelical count passes 900, and whether the Catholic decline slows or steepens. For now, the 2026 map stands as a snapshot of a region in transition — and of a movement that started in the 19th century with a church, a school and a hospital, and is still growing one congregation at a time.
