Hundreds of Christians marched to Kolkata's Esplanade on Thursday 5 November 2026, demanding protection for churches after 48 attacks on churches and prayer gatherings in West Bengal since May. The Bangiya Christiya Parishad (BCP) says police complaints have been filed in only 15 of those 48 incidents.

They walked in daylight, singing hymns and carrying placards, asking for something simple: the right to pray without being attacked.

The Basanti Church Attack That Sparked the March

The march was sparked by what happened four days earlier. On Sunday 1 November, a mob of 30 to 35 people stormed a newly built church at Narayantala in Basanti, South 24 Parganas, during its inauguration ceremony. They vandalised the cross, smashed the phones of devotees, and assaulted Bishop Subrata Chakraborty, along with priests and worshippers. At least 20 people were injured.

The church had been built for a day of joy. Families had gathered for the first service in their new building. Instead, the inauguration ended with the bishop hurt, the cross broken, and the congregation in shock. The same day, a prayer meeting in Harishchandrapur in Malda district was also attacked.

Police say the Basanti attack may stem from an internal dispute between two local Christian groups. That claim is still being examined, and it does not change what occured on the ground: a church was stormed during worship, and twenty people were hurt.

Bishop Chakraborty is the human heart of this story. He was not a distant official reading a statement. He was in the church when the mob came in, and he was among those assaulted. When he marched in Kolkata four days later, he carried the bruises of Basanti with him.

48 Attacks Since May, Complaints in Only 15

The BCP's count is what turned a single attack into a movement. Forty-eight incidents against churches and prayer gatherings since May 2026. Seven of them involved mainline churches: six Catholic and one Church of North India. The rest hit smaller congregations and prayer meetings, the kind of gatherings that rarely make the news.

West Bengal's Christians have faced this pattern before. Families have been attacked and forced into rituals, as reported in West Bengal Christian Families Attacked and Forced Into Rituals, Police File Case, and a church was vandalised during its inauguration in an earlier incident covered in Church Vandalised During Inauguration in West Bengal as Priests and Devotees Attacked. Christians have also told a people's tribunal about mob attacks on prayer meetings, as covered in Latest: West Bengal Christians Tell People's Tribunal of Mob Attacks on Prayer Meetings.

A Prayer Rally, a Meeting, and a March

The community did not go straight to the streets. On 1 November, the same day as the Basanti attack, the BCP held a prayer rally at Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata. Prayer came first. The march came after, when prayer alone had not brought answers.

On 4 November, a BCP delegation led by Herod Mullick met Jishnu Basu, the RSS chief in West Bengal, seeking his intervention. They were knocking on every door they could find.

Then came Thursday's march to the Esplanade, the heart of Kolkata. Hundreds of people, from across seperate denominations, walked together through the city. Catholics and Protestants, pastors and laypeople, young and old. The march was peaceful, but its message was blunt: 48 attacks, 15 complaints.

What Happens Now for West Bengal's Christians

The same quiet courage runs through persecuted churches around the world. In Myanmar, junta jets bombed a Bible school dormitory and killed three students, as reported in Three Bible School Girls Killed as Myanmar Junta Bombs Christian School in Karen State. In Ethiopia, dozens of Orthodox Christians have been killed in a wave of attacks, as covered in 34 More Orthodox Christians Killed in Ethiopia, Toll 94, and in Nigeria, Christians have been seized in raids, as reported in Two Christians Killed, 18 Seized in Kaduna Raid.

Back in Kolkata, the march has ended, but the questions it raised have not. Will the Basanti attackers face charges? Will the complaints in the other 33 incidents finally be filed? Will the churches that were attacked be able to worship in peace this Sunday?

For Bishop Chakraborty and the people who marched beside him, the march was only the beginning. They walked to the Esplanade to be seen and heard. What they are waiting for now is an answer, and the answer they want is not a speech.

The same faith under fire is visible wherever Christians gather in hard places. A Mississippi church baptized 59 after a revival reached a college campus in Mississippi Church Baptizes 59 After August Revival Reaches College Campus, while a doctor turned evangelist baptized 3,000 in one year in Doctor Turned Evangelist's Tent Revival Baptizes 3,000 in One Year. More than 200 people dedicated their lives to God at a revival in South Africa in More Than 200 People Dedicate Lives to God at Zion Centre Revival in Dan Tloome South Africa, and 550 people were baptized in the North Sea at Bridlington in UK Revival 2026: 550 People Baptized in the North Sea at Bridlington. Lilian Nneji released her first official album after almost 30 years in gospel music in Lilian Nneji Releases Highly Favoured After 30 Years.

The next test comes quickly. Churches across West Bengal will hold services this Sunday, and every congregation will be watching to see whether the march changed anything at all. If the attacks stop, the march will be remembered as the day the community found its voice. If they do not, the marchers will be back, and next time, there may be even more of them.
