Kevin Downswell Joy Is Here Album Released October 30 2026

Downswell previewed Joy Is Here at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, on 22 October 2026.

Inside Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, the guests did not sit still. Some danced while a new song played, and others wept through the next one, the Jamaica Observer reports. Downswell had split the room into small groups and asked each what it heard before explaining what he had lived through writing the songs.

Downswell told the Observer he felt an urgency he could not ignore: somebody needed these songs this year, whether one person or a million. "It feels like the most perfect thing I've ever done," he said.

That urgency runs through Joy Is Here, released on 30 October 2026. Downswell calls it his most vulnerable and personal project to date, the Observer reports. The album is not a polished victory lap, by his own account, but the sound of a man still learning to trust God in the middle of the story.

Kevin Downswell Joy Is Here Album Tuff Gong Listening Session Kingston

The listening session took place on Thursday, 22 October at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, eight days before release. Industry and media guests heard selected tracks in small groups and shared interpretations before Downswell explained each song. The interactive concept was developed by music industry strategist Judith Bodley.

The evening was hosted by Love 101 presenter Sara-Ann Miller, with DJ Rebirth providing musical entertainment. Recording artiste Romain Virgo and Jamaican athlete Natoya Goule were among those present, along with Downswell's mentor, Dr Henley Morgan.

Qaribo's 2 November report describes the same evening, with the same quotations and details. The launch-night picture therefore rests principally on the Observer's account, while Downswell's website independently confirms the release date and track list.

Kevin Downswell Testimony Songs Written in the Pandemic Season

The songs were largely writen during the COVID-19 pandemic, Downswell told the Observer in July 2026, when the album was still unnamed. "I wrote most of these songs in the pandemic, when we were feeling all the pressure and the battles, the tears, the pain and the disappointment," he said. "Wherever you are in your process, one song will connect with you."

That earlier interview is where his own testamony language is plainest. "You'll hear my story in every song," he said. "You'll know that I couldn't write like this if I hadn't been through something like this."

The first taste of the project came with Higher (From the Fire), released on Tuesday, 14 July, an Afro-soca anthem about overcoming life's trials. "Sometimes what was meant to destroy you actually lifts you higher," Downswell explained, pointing to the story of Joseph. The album moves beyond traditional gospel, he said, blending worship with reggae, Afro-soca, and calypso influences.

Joy Is Here Album Collaborations Papa San Gramps Morgan Marion Hall

Joy Is Here is a 10-track album with collaborations across Jamaican music and beyond. Papa San appears on Who Could It Be But God, Minister Marion Hall on You Remembered Me, Gramps Morgan on The Reason, and producer PantaSon on Bless Me. Moji Babaa of Kenya and Samuel Medas of Guyana also feature, per the official track list.

Working with artistes from different backgrounds is, for Downswell, a chance to share his faith more widely. "The kind of love and respect that I get from these artistes, I can't find words," he told the Observer. "Gramps Morgan being on this album is one of the humblest things ever."

He has walked this road before, and it has cost him criticism, after his earlier collaboration with dancehall veteran Bounty Killer on Call Him. "I got some lashing for it, and then a few months later the same people came back and said, 'Now I see what you were doing,'" Downswell recalled.

His line, repeated in both November reports, does not bend. "Anytime I am with an artiste, no matter where they are, it's no compromise. It's Jesus Christ every time," he said.

The album explores gratitude, perseverance, divine reassurance, and spiritual growth. The songs named in both reports include Higher (From the Fire), He's Not Done With You Yet, and It's Okay, I Got You. Downswell credited musical director and bassist Rhon Matthison, drummer Wendell Lawrence, keyboardists Chris Wright and Wade Johnson, and lead guitarist Brandon Benjamin.

"My greatest desire is to see a girl with earphones heading to school singing It's Okay, I Got You," he said. "Let these songs get our eyes off ourselves and our battles and put them on the one who matters most."

Joy Is Here is out now, and the pandemic-season songs are meeting listeners in ordinary places: earphones on the way to school, a car radio on the way to work, a kitchen where nobody is watching. Whether it becomes the most personal work of Downswell's career in listeners' ears is a question only the next months of listening will answer.
