Amin Ismail Freed From Kobar Prison in Sudan After More Than a Year But Still Not Safe in Khartoum

A quiet Khartoum street at dawn with a high prison wall and a lone figure walking away carrying a small bag, no text
Amin Ismail walked out of Kobar Prison in Khartoum after more than a year behind bars, but International Christian Concern says he is still in the capital and still at risk.

Amin Ismail walked back into Khartoum in July 2025 to visit his wife, and the next day he was arrested. He stayed in Kobar Prision, one of Sudan's harshest facilities, for more than a year. Then, International Christian Concern reported on 23 October 2026, the prison door opened, and he walked free, thanking God and asking for prayer to get safely out of the capital.

"I thank God for my release, and I am deeply grateful to ICC for their prayers and the help they gave," Ismail said in a statement published by International Christian Concern, known as ICC. "Their support played a big role in this miracle."

"I know it was the Lord who opened the door, and I continue to trust Him to take me safely out of the capital. Please keep praying for me and my family."

Amin Ismail Released Kobar Prison Khartoum Sudan

Ismail was not, on ICC's account, imprisoned for a crime he had committed. He was there because he is the son of Pastor Ismail Azzaz, a church leader who had refused to surrender church lands to government pressure, ICC reported. The Christian Post, reporting ICC's account on 30 October 2026, presents the same explanation: years of pressure on the father, followed by the son's arrest the day after he returned to the capital.

Pastor Azzaz fled Sudan years earlier after standing firm against attempts to bring the church under state control, ICC reported. He separated his children for their safety, ICC said. The father's exile and the son's return set up the collision that followed: a man came home to see his wife, and the family name he carried went with him through the prison gate.

Courts repeatedly found Amin innocent, ICC reported, yet he remained behind bars. The Christian Post repeats that detail, saying the organisation said courts repeatedly found him innocent while he stayed in prison.

No court document was published in either report, and the claim rests on ICC's account. The reports give no exact day of his release, only ICC's report date of 23 October 2026.

ICC also reported two darker claims about the case, both attributed to the organisation and not independently confirmed. It said a powerful man in the capital desired Ismail's wife, a claim the Christian Post presents as alleged, and that attempts were made to arrange his release only so that he could be killed outside the prison walls. ICC did not identify those allegedly involved, the Christian Post notes.

Sudan Pastor Son Prison Church Land Pressure Ismail Azzaz

"I know it was the Lord who opened the door, and I continue to trust Him to take me safely out of the capital."

ICC called the release an unexpected miracle, and said the prayers of many, including ICC partners, had been answered. "The long night of imprisonment has ended," the organisation wrote.

In the same report, it warned that the danger had not fully passed. Ismail's life remains at risk while he is still in Khartoum, ICC said, and those who sought to harm him have not disappeared.

Sudan Church Property Disputes Christians at Risk

Ismail's case sits inside a wider pattern of disputes over church property and leadership in Sudan, the Christian Post reports. In September, ICC reported that authorities were seeking to transfer control of property belonging to the Sudanese Church of Christ's Marzouq branch in Khartoum. The dispute followed years of government intervention in church governance, including the recognition of alternative leadership committees and legal action against leaders who opposed those changes.

Sudan's war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has further devastated communities and disrupted church life, the Christian Post reports. Christian congregations have faced the destruction of buildings, the displacement of members and difficulty maintaining ministries amid the fighting. Ismail's family story unfolds inside that larger ruin, where a prison release can be good news and still not be safety.

Readers can follow other Christians under pressure in 17 kidnapped worshippers who died in captivity in Kaduna, CSW says, and in Riley Moore saying Christians in Nigeria still face unspeakable violence. The attack on a church in India is covered in the church vandalised during its inauguration in West Bengal, and the prayer hall attack in the Maronite prayer hall vandalised in Nahariya.

Amin Ismail is out of Kobar Prison, and that is the fact his family prayed for. Whether he gets safely out of Khartoum, and whether his wife and family reach a place beyond the reach of the people ICC says wish him harm, is the question the next days will answer, and the one his father's prayers are still carrying.

A Sudanese Christian and the son of Pastor Ismail Azzaz, who fled Sudan years earlier after refusing to surrender church land amid government efforts to bring churches under state control, International Christian Concern reports.

How long was Amin Ismail in prison?

More than a year. He was arrested the day after returning to Khartoum in July 2025 to visit his wife, and was freed from Kobar Prison in Khartoum, ICC reported on 23 October 2026. The reports give no exact day of release.

Why did courts not free him earlier?

ICC reported that courts repeatedly found him innocent, yet he remained behind bars. No court document was published in the reports, and the claim rests on ICC's account, as the Christian Post also reports.

Is Amin Ismail safe now?

No, not yet, according to ICC. He remains in Khartoum, still seeking a safe way to leave, and ICC says his life remains at risk while he is in the capital. His father, still in exile, continues to fear for the family's safety.

Is this story confirmed by more than one independent source?

No. Both accounts used here rest on International Christian Concern's reporting of 23 October 2026: ICC's own report and the Christian Post / Christian Daily International article of 30 October 2026 reporting ICC's account. No independent second source confirming the release was found, and the claims about a powerful man's interest in Ismail's wife and about attempts to arrange his killing outside prison are ICC's allegations, presented as alleged by the Christian Post.
