Franni Cash Finds Jesus' Grace After Leaving Cult

Christian singer Franni Cash says discovering Jesus' grace changed her understanding of God as she healed from the controlling religious community of her childhood, telling RELEVANT in an interview published 29 October 2026 that meeting the real Jesus overturned the angry picture of God she had carried.
She was 13 when the community her family belonged to officially became a cult. She was 17 when they finally left.
And somewhere on the other side of it, she met a Jesus she did not recognise — because he was kind.
"He was so loving. And gracious with me," Cash told RELEVANT. "It changed everything."
Twelve Years Inside a Controlling Community
Cash told RELEVANT that her parents joined the community after their marriage hit a rough patch, when a friend suggested counseling. What began as help slowly tightened into something else, and by the time Cash was a teenager, the group had become a cult in her eyes. Christianity Today identified the group as Gathering International, which her family left during her senior year of high school.
Growing up there shaped how she saw God. She remembers being told to get off the worship stool because she was not "anointed enough". The message was crushing: God was an angry man upstairs, and she would never measure up.
"I just really thought that God was this angry man upstairs," she said. That picture stayed with her long after her family left.
Ten Years of Therapy and Learning to Speak
Healing did not come quickly. Cash said she struggled to speak freely in talk therapy, and found help instead through EMDR and brainspotting. She has contineud therapy for ten years.
Music nearly slipped away too. After stepping away from the family band at the end of 2023, she did not think she would make her own music at all. Then the songs started coming anyway — more than 200 of them — until she admitted songwriting was not a career choice. It was how she breathed.
"It's like you have to do it to breathe. Songwriting is breathing," she told CCM Magazine. She narrowed those 200 songs to the thirteen on her debut solo album.
Here I Am: A Record About Finding Her Voice
Her debut solo album, Here I Am, was released on 18 September 2026. The title comes from a lyric she wrote with her father, producer Ed Cash, for the song "The Real Thing": "Here I am, I made it through. The page is burned, but this story is not over." She had planned to use the title for a record when she was 16. Now she finally gets to use it.
"Now here I am, kind of on the other side of healing," she said.
The album's sharpest song is "Raised By Wolves", which confronts the spiritual manipulation her family witnessed. She wrote it with David Leonard and Andy Cherry, and it opens with a line David spoke in the writing room: "be quiet little girl."
Cash is no newcomer to Christian music. She spent years singing with We The Kingdom, formed by her father and uncle in 2018, when she was 20. The band earned two Grammy nominations, three Dove Awards and two No. 1 songs, and "Holy Water" became a staple in churches around the world.
She opened for Brandon Lake on his King of Hearts tour, and this fall joins Amy Grant on an eight-city tour. The solo path means she is the engine now, and she says the Lord keeps encouraging her to be brave.
A Family Closer Than Ever
The surprise is what happened at home. Cash told RELEVANT that she and her family are now closer than ever, with greater health and respect than before. The same father who produced songs on her record is now a collaborator, not a controller.
Asked what she would say to someone still inside a controlling church, her answer was short. "Leave. You're free to. God is gonna protect you."

Roosevelt Stewart stepped forward with his debut solo worship collection, as reported in Roosevelt Stewart Memory Live Album: Debut Solo Worship Collection October 2026.
The open question is what Cash does next with a voice she fought so hard to find. Here I Am closes one chapter — the girl told to be quiet, the God she feared. The next chapter is hers to write, and for the first time, nobody else is holding the pen.
