Pastor Terungwa Tyonungo Killed in Benue Market Attack

Pastor Terungwa Tyonungo was among four people killed when suspected armed herdsmen attacked the Abeda Shitile community in Gaambe-Tiev, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Eight other people were injured in the attack, which struck on market day as traders were preparing to leave.
The gunmen came at about 5 p.m., just as the market was winding down. Traders were packing up their stalls and getting ready for the journey home when the shooting started. For a farming community, market day is the busiest day of the week, the day the whole village gathers in one place. That is what made it so exposed.
A community leader named the four people killed as Msoo Chan, Pastor Terungwa Tyonungo, Suurshater Iornumbe and Dodo Shingir. The eight injured were named as Kumater Awua, Miracle Gangera, Tsetim Terungwa, Iortyom Helen, Seember Aondongu, Kofi Aondosoo, Chuku Okoro and Orker Iortyom. The remains of those killed were recovered and deposited at a local mortuary.
The Casualty Figures Do Not Agree
The number of dead is reported differently depending on who is counting. The community leader put the toll at four killed and eight injured, the Daily Post reports. The Benue State police public relations officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, said three people were killed and two injured, describing five people hurt, three of whom died on their way to hospital. The Tribune's headline put the toll higher still, at five killed.
That gap matters, and it is worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over. In the hours after an attack in a rural community, different counts travel at different speeds. Families count the names they know. Police count the bodies they have formally recorded. Newspapers count what their sources tell them first. The names in this story are the ones the community itself gave, and they are the anchor while the official figures settle.
What is not in dispute is that a pastor is dead, that traders were attacked as they left a market, and that eight people named by their community are now nursing injuries. For the familes involved, the argument over whether the number is three, four or five is beside the point. Someone they loved went to market on Tuesday and did not come home.
A Pastor Killed Among His People
Pastor Tyonungo was a working pastor, a man whose life was woven into the daily rhythms of his community. He was not a distant figure or a name on a poster. He was the kind of pastor who would be at the market with his neighbours, buying and selling alongside them, because in a farming village the market is where life happens.
His death lands differently because of that. A pastor killed while his community is at market is a pastor killed in the middle of ordinary life, not behind a pulpit or inside a church compound. It tells the people of Abeda Shitile that there is no safe corner left, no hour of the day and no place in the village where an attack cannot reach them.
Logo Local Government Area has been hit repeatedly in the pattern of herder attacks on Benue farming communities, and this latest attack follows that same grim shape. Armed men arrive, shooting starts, people scatter, and the community is left to count the dead and carry the injured to hospital. Each time, the names change. The shape does not.

What Happens to Logo Now
The injured are being treated, the dead have been taken to the mortuary, and the market that was full of traders on Tuesday afternoon is quiet again. That quiet is the part that lingers. A market is supposed to be noisy, crowded, alive with bargaining and greeting. When people are afraid to gather, a farming community loses more than a day's trade. It loses the place where it meets itself.
Whether the police figures or the community's figures turn out to be the final count, the pattern is what the people of Logo will carry into the coming weeks. They have buried neighbours before, and they know the drill by now: the funerals, the hospital visits, the waiting for the next attack. The open question is whether this time brings anything different, a response that actually reaches the villages before the gunmen do, or whether Abeda Shitile will simply join the long list of Benue communities left to grieve and carry on.
