Gunmen Kill Pastor and Three Others in Benue Market Attack November 2026

Photorealistic quiet rural Nigerian market street at dusk, empty wooden stalls and scattered baskets seen from a distance, a dusty road leading past simple low buildings toward low hills, soft evening light, still and empty, no people in close-up, no weapons, no violence depicted
At least four people were killed in the attack at Abeda Shitile, Vanguard, Premium Times and Leadership report.

Market day in Abeda Shitile was ending when the gunshots started. Traders were packing up at about 5 p.m. on a Tuesday, getting ready to head home, when people began running in every direction, and a pastor was among the dead.

At least four people were killed, including a man identified as a pastor, and others were injured, when gunmen attacked Abeda Shitile community in Gaambe-Tiev, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, according to all three reports read for this article. The attack happened on Tuesday 3 November 2026, during the community’s market day, which Premium Times says holds every Tuesday, as traders and residents were preparing to return home, and the reports were published on Wednesday 4 November.

Market Day Turns to Gunfire Abeda Shitile

A community leader told Vanguard that the attackers stormed the area and opened fire on unsuspecting residents, triggering panic and confusion, and that the attack lasted more than two hours with sporadic gunshots. The same account, as reported by Vanguard, says: “The gunmen moved from one location to another, shooting indiscriminately.”

An eyewitness told Premium Times that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on people at the market, then kept shooting at people encountered along the road as they left. That detail is single-source, attributed to Premium Times, and is not merged here with Vanguard’s account into one smooth unattributed narrative.

Vanguard only, in its community-leader account, reports that the operation began around a Point of Sale shop owned by Ernest Atindi Tor in the Ikyô Tor Dukur area, before extending towards the motor park along Afia Road. That route detail is attributed to Vanguard’s account and is not presented here as independently confirmed.

This article uses the neutral wording “suspected gunmen” throughout. The outlets label the attackers differently, and no label is settled here: Vanguard, reporting an anonymous community leader, calls them “suspected armed herdsmen,” Premium Times calls them “suspected armed bandits” in a residents’ account, and Leadership, reporting Logo LGA Chairman Clement Kav, calls them “suspected local bandits.”

No motive is asserted in this article. None of the opened sources establishes a motive, and none establishes that the attack was religiously targeted, and this article does not claim a link to any other attack.

Four Dead Reports Differ on the Names

All three sources agree that two of the dead were Msoo Chan and Suurshater Iornumbe. The pastor is referred to here as Pastor Terungwa, because the surname is agreed while the second name is disputed, and the reports differ on the full name of the pastor and on the fourth victim’s name.

Vanguard, reporting a community leader, gives the pastor’s name as “Pastor Terungwa Tyonungo” and the fourth dead person as “Dodo Shingir.” Premium Times, reporting a social-media post by youth leader James Gbor, and Leadership, reporting Chairman Kav, give the pastor’s name as “Pastor Terungwa Hungwa” and the fourth dead person as “Terkimbi Ikyereve.”

This article does not publish one combined four-name list as settled, and it does not choose one outlet’s list over the other without noting the difference. The remains of the four victims were recovered and deposited at a mortuary in the area, according to Vanguard, in a single-source account attributed to its community leader.

The injured count also differs between reports, and this article reports it as five or eight, according to differing reports. Vanguard reports eight injured, naming Kumater Awua, Miracle Gangera, Tsetim Terungwa, Iortyom Helen, Seember Aondongu, Kofi Aondosoo, Chuku Okoro and Orker Iortyom, receiving treatment at a health facility.

Premium Times and Leadership report five injured, naming Gangera Kumater, Helen Iortyom, Terungwa Tsetim, Kumater Awua and Orkertyo Iortyom, with Leadership giving one name as “Gangera Kumater Miracle.” No single settled injured list is published here, name spellings are copied exactly as attributed, and no injured person’s condition, age or church is stated.

A Community Asks for Protection

Leadership reports that Logo LGA Chairman Clement Kav confirmed the incident by telephone on Wednesday, saying: “The suspected local bandits invaded Abeda Shitile, Mbavuur, Gaambe-Tiev on Tuesday on market day and started shooting. I can confirm that four were killed and five were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital.”

Vanguard and Premium Times both report that efforts to reach Benue State Police spokesperson DSP Peter Aondongu were unsuccessful, with calls unanswered at the time of filing. Police had not commented at the time of the reports, and this article does not claim a police investigation, arrests, or any official motive.

Residents called on security agencies and government authorities to urgently intervene, investigate, and apprehend those responsible, according to Leadership, and appealed for strengthened security in Abeda Shitile and neighbouring communities. Residents said they beleive stronger security is now urgent, in Leadership’s account of their appeal, and no official response is reported in the opened sources.

Separate Benue coverage, clearly a different incident, is reported in Latest: Seven Christian Mourners Kidnapped in Benue as $23000 Ransom Demanded, about seven Christian mourners kidnapped in Benue. Other Benue attacks, also separate incidents, are covered in 9 Christians Killed in Benue Nigeria Attack October 2026 and Christians Killed in Nigeria Today: Fulani Extremists Kill 9 in Benue State Attack.

A different Kaduna incident, about worshippers abducted in April whose deaths were disclosed on 2 November, is reported in Latest: 17 Kidnapped Worshippers Died in Captivity in Kaduna, CSW Says. That Kaduna story must not be read as the same incident as the Benue market attack, and its victims are not the victims named in this article.

Whether police will comment, and what security follows for Abeda Shitile, is still unknown in the reports read for this article. The market will hold again on a Tuesday, the stalls will fill again, and the question the community asked, through Leadership, is whether protection will arrive before the next market day.
