Latest: Pope Leo XIV Clinically Fit for Latin America Trip as Vatican Reveals 12-Day Programme November 3

Twelve days, ten cities, and roughly a dozen flights stood between Pope Leo XIV and a journey he had already promised to make. On Tuesday afternoon, 3 November 2026, the Holy See Press Office laid out the full programme in Rome, Vatican News reports, and the message was clear: the Pope is ready to go.
This was not the first word about the trip. FaithStories had already reported the confirmation and the clearance to travel after surgery. What changed on 3 November was the detail: the public programme, the health update, and remarks from the Vatican's new communications chief.
The journey runs from 6 to 17 November 2026 and visits three countries, Vatican News reports. It begins in Uruguay from 6 to 8 November, in Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida, then moves to Argentina from 8 to 11 November, in Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján, and ends in Peru from 11 to 17 November, in Lima, Chiclayo, Cuzco and Pucallpa.
The two briefing reports describe the scale in slightly different words, and the difference matters. Vatican News says the itinerary involves approximately a dozen flights and visits to ten cities, with around 40 addresses, all in Spanish. OSV News, reporting through the Catholic Telegraph, puts the figure at about 36 speeches, attributed to Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office.
Neither figure should be treated as a settled final count, because the reports do not agree on one exact number. The honest picture is a programme of around three dozen to 40 addresses or speeches, with each figure attributed to the outlet that reported it. Both reports agree on the shape of the days ahead: long travel, many meetings, and a Pope speaking in Spanish throughout.
Pope Leo XIV Health Update After October Surgery
Bruni answered the health question directly, according to both reports. Vatican News quotes him as saying no changes had been made because the Pope is in great health and the surgery resolved the concern, leaving no permanent condition. OSV News reports Bruni as saying no therapy is required and the Pope is clinically fit to travel, based on what doctors told the Press Office.
OSV News adds that no particular accommodation or equipment is being used for medical reasons, and that the surgery on 13 October removed part of his lung. No diagnosis wording beyond that appears in either opened report, and no claim is made here that goes further than the briefing.
Maria Montserrat Alvarado, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, said the Pope personally confirmed this trip, with no changes, Vatican News reports. OSV News reports that she assumed the prefect role on 1 November and that this was her first press conference in the role, and both outlets report her describing the Pope as personally enthusiastic and so excited.
Alvarado read a short message from the Pope. He is looking forward to this journey and hopes people will help share his message of peace and encounter, so others can see the wonderful way the Church is expressed in Latin America. She also warned reporters to expect improvised texts, saying he will give them a lot of improvised texts to work with, OSV News reports.
Pope Leo XIV Latin America Programme Uruguay Argentina Peru
Bruni set out priorities that kept returning to people on the margins, Vatican News reports. The programme includes encounters with prisoners, visits to places affected by environmental exploitation, and closeness to the poor and vulnerable, with a message of communion and unity.
Uruguay, Argentina and Peru will each have a seperate feel, shaped by different histories and different local Churches. The mottos are Uruguay, “I bring you news of great joy”, Argentina, “Welcome everyone, go and proclaim”, and Peru, “Let us open our hearts”, Vatican News reports.
Bruni also recalled saints and blesseds for each stop, Vatican News reports: Blessed Jacinto Vera for Uruguay, Enrique Shaw, St José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero and Mama Antula for Argentina, and St Rose of Lima, St Martin de Porres and St Toribio de Mogrovejo for Peru.
Peru is described as a homecoming, because the Pope served there for decades as a missionary and bishop, Vatican News reports. He will meet Augustinian communities in Argentina and on arrival in Peru. Uruguay has not received a Pope since St John Paul II in 1988, and Argentina not since 1987.
Why Uruguay When It Is So Secular
Alvarado was asked why the Pope would go to Uruguay, given its secular character, and her answer was simple, Vatican News reports. Asked why go to Uruguay when it is so secular, she answered, “Why not? The Gospel is meant to go everywhere.” OSV News describes Uruguay as the most secularized country in Latin America, a characterisation attributed to OSV, not stated here as a measured fact.
Bruni confirmed that the Pope will meet with victims of clerical sexual abuse during the course of the journey, Vatican News reports. No date, place or number of victims was given, and no detail is added here, because the briefing gave none and the meeting has not yet happened.

When the plane leaves for Montevideo, the programme will stop being a briefing document and start being a journey of handshakes, Masses and improvised words. The question for watchers far away is the one in his message: whether they will catch something of how the Church is expressed in Latin America.
