Jonathan Falwell: 'The Church, Not the White House, Is America's Greatest Hope' at Freedom Uncensored

The applause was still warm in Liberty University's brand-new Champion Center when Jonathan Falwell said the line that christain media will be quoting all weekend. America's hope, he told the opening night crowd of the Freedom Uncensored conference, is not found in the White House — it is found in God's house.
"I'm just a firm believer that the hope for our country is not found in the White House, it's not found in the State House, it's not found in the courthouse, it's found in God's house," Falwell said on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Falwell — Liberty's chancellor and senior pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church — welcomed attendees to the fifth annual Freedom Uncensored conference with a challenge: Christians must stop remaining silent and begin actively sharing their faith. The two-day gathering, hosted by Liberty's Standing for Freedom Center on Oct 23-24, carries the theme "America is Worth Saving."
What Did Jonathan Falwell Say at Freedom Uncensored?
His core message was spiritual, not political — a point he returned to again and again.
"I believe with all of my heart that the church today must stand up and let our voices be heard to make sure that we're pointing people to the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ," he continued.
"Because ultimately that is where our hope lies."
He warned that society has increasingly rejected biblical truth. He argued that Christians have a responsibility to respond by proclaiming the gospel rather than withdrawing from cultural conversations.
"As followers of Christ, we do not have the luxury to stick our heads in the sand," Falwell said.
"We must stand up and continue to preach truth, to share truth, and to live truth."
But the tone he demanded was love, not combat.
"We must be passionate and we do so in love," he said.
"We want to reflect the love of Jesus Christ. We don't want to beat down the world. What we want to do is we want to win the world."
Why 'The Church, Not the White House'?
The line lands because it cuts against the grain of the very weekend it headlined. Freedom Uncensored gathers prominent Christian and conservative voices — the kind of room where political hope runs high. Falwell's move was to redirect that hope upward and inward: to the church's mission rather than any party's platform.
"We cannot sit back and expect that things are going to get better," he said. He framed the Christian calling through the Great Commission — believers engaging the world rather than isolating themselves from it. "What we have the privilege of doing is being lighthouses in the midst of darkness," he said.
He closed by urging attendees to leave the gathering with renewed determination to point others toward Jesus Christ.
He reminded them their ultimate mission is spiritual, not political.
"What I can tell you today that the world is not a lost cause," Falwell said. "That we will be able to change the world because God is still King, and that is the mission."
The message rhymes with other recent calls for the church to find its voice in public life — from churches winning their appeal over immigration raids at houses of worship to the Supreme Court fight over St. Mary v. Roy. Falwell's version is simpler: the answer was never in Washington. It was in the pews all along.
Who Spoke at Freedom Uncensored 2026?
The lineup blends faith leaders, cultural commentators and public figures. Keynote speakers include Erika Kirk — CEO and Chairwoman of Turning Point USA and a Liberty alumna — and Dr. Ben Carson, the former presidential candidate and neurosurgeon, who keynotes the Saturday-night gala. Other featured speakers include Lucas Miles, conservative commentator Benny Johnson, former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, Daily Wire personality Isabel Brown, Shane Winnings, Nick Freitas, Bill Federer and actress Leigh-Allyn Baker.
Ryan Helfenbein, executive director of the Standing for Freedom Center, delivered the opening address alongside Falwell's welcome. Attendees also join meet-and-greets and breakout sessions led by The Family Foundation, The Leadership Institute and 7 Weeks Coffee, per Liberty's announcement.
The 2026 edition follows a 2025 summit that honored Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk — assassinated Sept. 10 and instrumental in starting the Standing for Freedom Center in 2020 — with his widow Erika now headlining, per Liberty's own reporting.
What Is the Standing for Freedom Center?
The Standing for Freedom Center is Liberty University's public-policy and cultural engagement arm, hosting Freedom Uncensored as its flagship annual conference to inspire the next generation to defend life, liberty and truth in the public square. Falwell tied the weekend to Liberty's founding in 1971, when his father, the late Jerry Falwell Sr., established the institution with 154 students and a mission to train "champions for Christ."
He contrasted those humble beginnings with the university's worldwide reach today — more than 150,000 students enrolled. Yet, he insisted, the Christian mission remains unfinished. The same urgency drives movements like Student Baptism Sunday, where Gen Z students are choosing faith in public, and voices like John Lennox calling Christians out of silence.
Two days, one Champion Center, and a sentence that will outlive the weekend. Whether the church answers Falwell's call is the question the conference leaves hanging — deliberately, and it is the question that will recieve the most attention in the days to come.
The world is not a lost cause, he said — but somebody has to say so out loud.
